FEMINIST HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2018!

Folks! It’s that time of year again! The holidays are so STRESSFUL and we’re here to help with this BANGER of a list jam packed with gift ideas for your favourite feminists!

Bananalands’ “Nobody’s Chick” Ringer Tee. Feminist, Aboriginal owned business with heaps of great shirts, stickers and bags, locally made in Naarm (Melbourne).

Third Drawer Down’s Guerilla Girls Collection. TDD is an independent concept destination that curates objects from around the world, as an interpretation of the traditional museum or gallery store. We love their collection of Guerilla Girls merch- a group that’s been around for about 30 years. They’re a collective of anonymous artists who wear gorilla masks in public and use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose discrimination and corruption in art, film, politics, and pop culture.

The Trading Circle is a not-for-profit organisation creating opportunities for women and girls, enabling them to reach their full potential through ethical trade, education and other programs. In Sydney/Gadi, TTC operates a store that sells fair trade products, a communal eatery that empowers refugees, and offer a diverse range of educational programs both in schools and in store. Check out their online shop- we like their market bag made from recycled juice packs.

Doodad and Fandango. Brainchild of Sydney/Gadi's Nikita Margarita, Doodad’s bits and pieces have been a favourite of ours for yonks! Everything from her Bad Baby Feminist Earrings to her Frida K Necklace, sign us up!

Emily’s List exists to elect pro-choice women candidates. It exists in Australia too, but our sisters in America have some darn cute merch, and it all goes back into funding women’s participation in politics.

Bianca Beers’ Bad Gal Print. Bianca is a young Sydney/Gadi-based artist and we just love this illustration of Rihanna. Heaps more cool art over there too.

Our sisters at IWDA have these awesome feminist word jumble magnets. Only $2, and all profits go towards women’s leadership programs.

Frida Las Vegas is based in Sydney/Gadi and we LOVE everything in her bright, neon, kitschy world! Especially her gender-inclusive “glamour sacks.” Here’s our literary fav, Michelle Law, modelling the “Agro Cone.”

The best bookshop in the world, Readings, has put together this ACE curated collection of books for the little feminists out there! We also love Penguin’s Little Book of Feminist Saints!

Brisbane/Meanjin designer Helen Bayley launched Lovestar in 2013. The brand was born out of her love for flowers, nature, fashion and the arts. She makes vases and bag danglers primarily and we’re big fans of her Iris Apfel vase.

Two Good are one of our partners! They provide us with food and employment for our clients and also have a beautiful collection of luxury skin and haircare products.  We reckon their cedar and cinnamon Care Gift Pack is pretty amazing- 250ml Luxe Shampoo, Conditioner, Moisturiser and Body Wash. Paraben Free. Sulphate Free. 100% Essential Oils. No testing on animals. The products are also vegan. The price includes a pack for you and an identical pack to a shelter or service supporting women who have fled domestic violence and also includes postage.

Proud Minority specialize in apparel, stickers and totes for the Feminist and LGBTIAQ+ community and young people. All produced ethically in Melbourne/Naarm. This Activist Pride tee has definitely caught our attention!

Laneway Learning runs cheap, fun classes in anything and everything. It happens on weekday evenings in cafes, bars and other spaces around Melbourne/Naarm. Classes usually have about 20 people to keep it friendly. Why not buy a voucher? You can learn a LOT-  Flower crowns, sword-fighting, tea brewing, paper jewellery, chemistry of life, light painting, bibliotheraphy, macramé, posies, comfort zones, building time machines, secrets of baking, zombie movies, fear and procrastination, ukuleles… so many classes to choose from!

The Market by Global Sisters supports women producers to start their own business to create beautiful, marketable products with a heart and a story. Sourced from a range of suppliers including the women they work directly with through their programs here in Australia and from registered social enterprises, Fairtrade makers, GOTS organic certified suppliers and ethical makers globally. All women makers work in safe, supportive conditions, and are paid a living wage.  Some BEAUTIFUL items to peruse in their shop.

Melbourne Babes of the Music Underground 2019 Calendar! Whether contributing through the running of community spaces, booking shows, doing sound, running distros, hosting radio shows or being huge fans, these babes are all a massive part of the Melbourne/Naarm music scene. All profits to the wonderful Minus18 and Sisters Inside.

Haus of Dizzy is one of our all-time favs. Made and owned by Wiradjuri woman Kristy Dickinson, HOD is full of awesome bling, including these earrings, for the deadliest person in your life.

Lore Perfumery is owned and operated in Fitzroy by three amazing women. The store is a treasure trove of sensory delights with a VAST (no joke) product range covering everything from beauty and body care brands to haircare, homewares, home fragrance & everything in between.

Bluethumb is Australia’s biggest online art gallery! There’s some amazing work over there, with a great focus on female identifying artwork! Can we suggest Karen Coull, Kim Leutwyler, Sherry McCourt (below), and Ash King? So many more there too.

Amy Blue does amazing illustrations too, but we can’t resist her lapel pins! Who could say no to this AbFab set?!

And of course, how could we forget novels by Roxane Gay, Rebecca Solnit, Mary Beard, Jamila Rizvi, Lindy West, Clementine Ford, Jenny Valentish and Tara Moss.

Go forth, our pretties! Happy gifting.
